One service call repeats itself every single wet season without fail: a machine that ran fine all winter suddenly starts double-feeding, curling paper, or putting down streaky, uneven toner sometime around May or June. Most general office-equipment advice frames temperature and humidity control as being about keeping people comfortable, on the assumption that whatever feels fine to staff is automatically fine for the machine. That’s backwards, and it’s especially backwards in a subtropical climate.
Paper is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air constantly, and the edges of a ream absorb it faster than the center because they’re more exposed. In a humid room, the outer sheets in a paper tray swell slightly at the edges while the center stays flatter, which is exactly the condition that causes multi-sheet feeds, misfeeds, and paper jams that have nothing to do with the machine itself being faulty. Toner fusing runs into trouble from the opposite direction: excess moisture in the paper can cause toner to fuse unevenly or the sheet to curl coming out of the fuser, because the fuser’s heat drives off moisture unevenly across a damp page as it prints.
None of this shows up as a helpful error code. It shows up as “the copier’s been acting up lately,” which is why so many of these calls get misdiagnosed as a hardware failure when the actual fix is paper storage and room humidity, not a technician visit.

This is also where multi-brand comparison earns its keep instead of being a sales talking point: Canon, Ricoh, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, and HP don’t all handle humidity recovery identically, and for an office with a genuinely difficult room — a storage closet, a space near a loading dock, a building with inconsistent after-hours AC — that difference is worth factoring into which machine gets placed there, not just which one has the lowest monthly payment.
There’s a further wrinkle worth flagging for offices within a few miles of the water — a large share of the tri-county area, honestly. Buildings closer to the coast tend to run older HVAC systems that pull in more outside air per cycle than a newer, tightly sealed inland building, which means the baseline humidity a machine sits in can run a few points higher even with the AC running normally.
